2005 chevrolet silverado 2500hd review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Standing like a rock against new competition. introductionthe choice for best full-size pickup is not as clear as it was three years ago, when the chevrolet silverado and the gmc sierra appeared to be the leaders of the pack. Since then, ford has introduced an all-new f-150, dodge has re-engineered the ram, toyota has added a crew cab model to its tundra line, and nissan has rolled out the appropriately named titan. There isn't a dog among them. All are superb in their own way.  yet silverado still rides as well or better than any of them, and it handles well. It's quick and it's comfortable. Boxed and hydroformed frame rails give silverado a strong, rigid platform. It is, as the advertising tagline says, like a rock. Silverado's interior was significantly updated in 2003, and so was its electrical system. Heated seats, a bose stereo, xm satellite radio and other options make long days spent in a silverado comfortable and enjoyable.  for 2005, most silverados come with wider, lower-profile tires on 17-inch wheels, promising better handling than before. Short-box extended cabs with 4wd now offer a more powerful all-alumium v8, while a gas/electric hybrid option promises lower operating cost with v8 performance. More minor changes for 2005 include dual electric cooling fans, which are quieter and more efficient than the engine-driven fan used previously. Three trim levels are available: base, ls, and lt, plus a sporty ss. Full-width fleetside beds are standard, but retro sportside beds are offered for selected models. Avaialble only as a crew cab with a 6-foot, 6-inch bed (instead of the standard 1500 crew cab's 5-foot, 8-inch bed), the 1500hd hauls 3,073 pounds with 2wd, 2,766 pounds with 4wd, and tows 10,200 pounds. Power is provided by the big 6. 0-liter v8 that's used in the 2500hd/3500.  standard equipment on all silverado models are cruise control, cd player, a step bumper, and 17-inch chromed steel wheels. The w/t (work truck) package, intended primarily for commercial and municipal fleet sales, deletes these niceties for an average credit of $1,600.  moving up to ls trim (starting at $25,265) adds a long list of comforts and appointments, including power windows, locks and mirrors; upgraded audio and upholstery; and the 4. 8-liter v8 with automatic transmission. Ls crew cabs come with the 5. 3-liter v8 and automatic. Silverado lt (starting at $32,965) is downright luxurious, with leather upholstery, automatic climate control, bose audio, and a new version of the onstar telematics system. The 5. 3-liter v8 is standard on all lt models.  the z71 off-road package includes full ls trim, plus special off-road suspension, locking rear differential, p265/70r17 on/off-road tires, skid plates, high-capacity air cleaner, wheel flares, fog lamps, and deep-tinted glass.  silverado ss is a performance model equipped with a high-output 345 horsepower vortec 6000 6. 0-liter engine designed for quick acceleration and relaxed cruising. Crew cab models offer a panasonic dvd passenger entertainment system 1,295) and rear-seat audio controls. Late in the model year, extended cabs and crew cabs will offer a power sunroof 1,100). A passenger-sensing system automatically deactivates the passenger-side front air bag under certain conditions to protect children. Active safety features include anti-lock brakes (abs) on all models. The silverado shares its bold design cues with the avalanche, the trailblazer suv, and the mid-size colorado pickup. The silverado looks more conteporary than the relatively conservative suburban and tahoe suvs.  silverado's headlights angle down at the top like the determined eyebrows of a marine drill sergeant. A large band runs across the middle of the grille punctuated in the middle by a big, gold chevy bow tie. All of this is smoothly integrated into the front end, along with spaces for fog lamps and recessed tow hooks. The flared engine hood and squared-off wheel openings continue the aggressive theme down the sides of the truck. In the rear are bulging taillamps that maintain the chevrolet family look yet uniquely identify the silverado. Optional puddle lamps mounted beneath the big side mirrors light the ground along the sides of the truck, handy in the woods and in the city. Heavy-duty models have running lights on the roof, tailgate, and leading and trailing edges of their bulging rear fenders. They add visibility for improved safety. Indentations stamped into the inner bed walls can hold boards to form bulkhead dividers or a second floor for two-tier loading. The silverado's load floor is 31. 6 inches above the ground on 2wd models, and 33. 7 inches with 4wd. That's relatively low, and low is good when loading heavy cargo. Short-box beds are 78. 7 inches long; long boxes are 97. 6 inches long. Fleetside boxes are 64. 8 inches wide (at the floor); sportside boxes measure 49. 1 inches wide. All fleetside boxes measure 50 inches wide between the wheel housings.  a pro-tec composite box is available for silverado 1500 extended cab short-box models. Pro-tec is a nearly indestructible material that's lighter and stronger than steel. It never rusts and it resists dents. Pro-tec tailgates can support a lot more weight than steel tailgates. interiorinside, the silverado is roomy and comfortable. The seats are big and cushy, though we don't always find them comfortable for long trips. The standard front bench seat can seat three, giving extended cab and crew cab models capacity for six people. It's split 40/20/40, and the middle part folds down to become a center console/armrest. There's lots of head room and plenty of leg room, hip room, and shoulder room. The standard bench is available in cloth or vinyl.  optional bucket seats are more comfortable and adjust every which way. We like both the premium cloth and the leather. The bucket seats are separated by a deep center console that holds lots of stuff. The top of the lid features a nice rubber-lined indention handy for small items, though it would be even better if the rubber was an insert that could be removed for cleaning. The top of the console is angled forward, which seems unfortunate because clipboards and other items placed there tend to slide off. A big coat hook makes picking up the dry cleaning easier.  the instrument panel features a large speedometer and tachometer. Smaller gauges to the right display oil pressure, water temperature, fuel quantity, and battery charge. Hd models with the heavy-duty trailering package come with a transmission temperature gauge on the left. All use highly legible white-on-black graphics. Headlamps and taillamps turn on automatically when it gets dark. A driver information center, located in the instrument panel cluster, provides various bits of information Anti-lock Brakes✔ Tachometer✔ Heated Seats✔ Power Windows✔ Bucket Seats✔ CD Player✔ Cruise Control✔ Climate Control✔ Sunroof/Moonroof

2001 chevrolet suburban review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Bigger gets better. introductionchevy's suburban was totally redesigned and re-engineered for 2000. Three trim levels are available: base, ls and lt. Suburban 1500s come equipped with a 5. 3-liter v8. The 2500s are available with a choice of 6. 0-liter or 8. 1-liter v8s.  base 1500 models list for $25,921 in 2wd and $28,837 in 4wd. Base-trim 2500s go for $27,780 in 2wd and $30,780 in 4wd. Ls gets a nicer cloth reclining front bench seat with adjustable lumbar support; and bucket seats are an option. Lt is fitted with leather seating surfaces and premium full-function heated front bucket seats. Lt also comes with electronic climate control, premium cd stereo, the homelink universal garage door opener, and gm's onstar system. All the sheet metal was new for 2000. The entire vehicle looks smoother and more aerodynamic. Sharp edges have been rounded. Most noticeable are the new headlights.  two tailgate configurations are available. A lightweight, one-piece rear hatch similar to those found on compact suvs is useful for families and can be opened with one hand. Chevrolet lists it as a no-cost option. Cargo doors are also useful when pulling trailers because they will usually clear the trailer tongue jack. And i like them because it's easier to control my dog when i open them. The hinges have been re-engineered for a more finished appearance; and they let the doors open wide without having to disconnect the hinges.  a puddle lamp mounted below the side mirrors shines down to light up the perimeter of the suburban. It's a nice feature that can be turned on using the keyless remote when approaching the suburban in a dark parking garage, as it illuminates underneath the vehicle. The third-row seatback folds down without having to remove the headrests, then the whole thing flips forward to substantially increase cargo capacity. A short prop rod locks it into place. This bench seat can be easily removed as it's mounted on wheels; it weighs 75 pounds, however, so get some help before pulling it out the back end of the suburban. Loading cargo is easy because there's plenty of space for it; lift-over height is lower than that of the ford excursion. Lt's leather seats seem more supportive. The second row is quite comfortable. Headphone jacks allow rear-seat passengers to listen to cds while those up front turn on the radio. Getting back there requires folding and flipping the seat out of the way.  though my height-challenged mother-in-law found getting into the suburban a bit of a step up, it isn't a problem for those of standard stature. Step-in height is actually lower than before because of the new fully boxed frame. Driving quickly over wet pavement through the san juan mountains, high above colorado's delores river, we never lost traction. I took turns driving the suburban on the wet, winding road with the road test editor from one of the major enthusiast magazines. Each of us has extensive racing experience, but we were unable to get the suburban to come unglued. We drove into wet turns as quickly as we'd ever want to go in a suburban and never lost grip. The frame is completely re-engineered. The entire front part of the frame is hydro-formed from one piece of metal and is far more rigid than a bunch of pieces welded together.  ride quality in the suburban 1500 is smooth, greatly improved over the previous-generation suburban. The optional premium ride suspension features a hydraulically controlled rear self-leveling system to keep the suburban at normal ride height even when carrying heavy loads. This system offered a good ride quality on the suburban i drove. The more sophisticated optional auto-ride suspension system uses computer-controlled shock damping for improved ride quality over uneven pavement. Whether towing a horse trailer or picking up a soccer team, auto-ride continually adjusts the suspension for optimum ride and handling. This technology also helps reduce dive on braking (so that the nose of the vehicle doesn't dip down unduly), and body roll (or lean) during cornering. Most people find the 1500 models meet their needs.  the 2500 models, often referred to as the 3/4-ton versions, are only needed for those who tow heavy trailers. Rated to tow up to 10,500 pounds, they effectively match the towing capacity of the ford excursion. Suburban 2500 will ride a bit harsher because its rear suspension uses leaf springs instead of the coil-springs used on the 1500. But the 2500 rides surprisingly well, given its load range, a big improvement over the previous-generation 2500 models and smoother than the big ford excursion.  until last year, suburbans came with mushy brakes. Gm redesigned the brake system to address this. The pedal on the new suburban works smoothly and progressively, which makes is easier to stop without drama. A new dynamic rear proportioning system modulates the pressure applied to the rear brakes for more effective braking. Brake pads and rotors are 40 percent larger and use twin-piston calipers. Those in the sunbelt may not see justification for it. If conditions are fluctuating, hit the auto 4wd button and the autotrac all-wheel-drive system automatically transfers power from a slipping wheel to the wheels with the best traction; no input is needed from the driver.  for 2001, the 2500's 6. 0-liter v8 has aluminum heads and a revised camshaft, producing a nice, round 300 horsepower. We haven't tried the new 8. 1-liter v8, but responsiveness from either the 5. 3 or 6. 0 is excellent.  suburban's automatic transmission comes with a tow/haul mode. Pressing a switch on the end of the column shifter changes the shift points of the transmission. The tow/haul mode improves performa. summarywe love the suburban. It's a great vehicle for moving cargo, towing trailers, or hauling people. Power Windows✔ Anti-lock Brakes✔ Bucket Seats✔ Climate Control✔ Sunroof/Moonroof✔ Air Conditioning✔ Leather Seats

2003 chevrolet avalanche review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Tahoe roominess with silverado capability. introductionlonger than a suburban, the chevy avalanche combines the comfort of a tahoe with the load-hauling capability of a long-bed silverado pickup. Introduced last year and revised for 2003, this is an impressive concept vehicle that made it all the way to production. The key to its versatility is the midgate, gm's clever tailgate that separates the cabin from the pickup box. Normally, the avalanche can carry five adults in comfort and a large amount of cargo in a covered 5-foot 3-inch indestructible bed. But the rear seats fold down like in an suv, the midgate folds forward like a tailgate and voila! We think it looks better, cleaner, if a bit plainer this way. Cladding is still available. Made of a practically bullet-proof material that will protect the rocker panels from years of flying gravel, it comes in a darker color for 2003  for 2003, the avalanche benefits from a long list of improvements to all the full-size pickups and suvs from gm. The new electrical system architecture ha. New features improve safety, comfort, convenience, and performance. One thing that hasn't changed, however, is the attention to detail seen throughout the avalanche. It comes mated to a 4l85 heavy-duty automatic transmission with overdrive and tow/haul mode. In place of the 1500 model's five-link rear suspension with coil springs and automatic load leveling, the 2500 rides on heavy-duty leaf springs. Relative to the 1500, the 2500 does not add any luxury equipment or interior appointments, but it does come with its own heavy-duty carpeting and floor mats, a larger (37. 5-gallon) fuel tank, and skid shields on 4wd models. Wheels are forged rather than cast, and tires are higher-profile 245/75r16's, rather than the 1500's 265/70r16s. Available as an option for 1500 models are 17-inch wheels with 265/70r17 tires.  new for 2003 is a driver convenience package 717) that includes multi-zone automatic climate control; power adjustable pedals; a homelink universal transmitter; power-folding outside mirrors with turn signals and ground illumination; and programmable, steering-wheel-mounted controls for the audio system, onstar, trip computer and message center.  the north face edition 5100) for the 4wd 1500 features chevy's z71 off-road suspension, green and black seats, floor mats with north face logos, a white instrument cluster, the driver convenience package, and the north face badges on the c-pillars. Medium-gray interior trim and inner door panels are new for 2003. Sage green exterior paintwork is still exclusive to the north face edition, with sunset orange, onyx, black, pewter and summit white available as well. Also included are two summit pod backpacks, as well as water duffalo storage bags.  . walkaroundintroduced last year, the chevy avalanche is an impressive concept vehicle that made it all the way to production. One thing that surprises many people is the size of the avalanche. It doesn't look that big in photos, but it's big, three inches longer than a suburban. Yet it feels tight and surprisingly nimble on mountain roads.  the avalanche is essentially a modified chevrolet suburban; the two vehicles share fully 85 percent of their parts. So like the suburban, the avalanche is built on the same superb platform as the silverado pickup. Gm's engineers created the avalanche by lopping off the rear roof structure and quarter windows of a suburban, and redesigning the back end. When the avalanche's rear seats are in place, there's a 5-foot 3-inch bed, which is long enough for most tasks. When that's not enough it converts into an 8-foot bed by taking over the rear seats.  the bed is protected by a well-designed lockable cover rated to support 250 pounds. The midgate, tailgate and portions of the cargo box are made from a composite material called pro-tec. This material is exceptionally durable, and resists dings, scratches and dents. Two top-box storage compartments on either side of the cargo box provide a combined 3. 5 cubic feet of lockable storage space. These compartments have drains, so they can be filled with ice and used as coolers.  the edgy front styling of last year's avalanche gave it a unique look among chevrolet's full-size light trucks. For 2003, chevrolet has applied the same look to the silverado pickup (but not the suburban and tahoe), so the 2003 avalanche doesn't look quite as different as it did before. However, the avalanche is still distinguished from the silverado by its more exaggerated fender flairs, and by its extensive body cladding. The composite cladding, which is darker in color for 2003, does serve a purpose: it is as tough as iron and impervious to flying gravel.  . interiorthis year, the chevy avalanche interior benefits from extensive improvements gm has built into all of its 2003 full-size trucks and suvs. Multi-zone manual climate control is now standard on all models. A new instrument cluster promises better readability.  safety improvements for 2003 include dual-level air bags with an automatic passenger-sensing system. That means a comfortable cabin for passengers and good ergonomic design for the driver. The seats in the avalanche are identical to the first two rows in the suburban. The avalanche comes with a coffee warmer, and the ultimate in sun visors. Map lights are available; in fact, chevrolet has provided generous illumination throughout the cabin. The midgate works similarly to a folding rear seat in a wagon or suv. Flipping the seat bottoms forward and folding the seat backs and midgate down provides flat cargo space and access to the cargo bay behind it. The bed cover comes off in three pieces and slides into a nice fabric bag; these pieces attach to the side of the bed to minimize the space they take up. But wind noise is minimal, with no buffeting. Gm engineers achieved this through extensive tuning in the wind tunnel, and a pair of flying butt. Climate Control✔ CD Changer

2005 chevrolet suburban review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. America's heavy-duty family hauler. introductionas familiar as the family dog, the chevrolet suburban cruises into 2005 with the same maximum-size virtues that have kept it a best-seller for so many years. Since the 'burb first appeared, it has never wavered from its mission. It remains the first choice for anyone who needs to haul six or more people plus their cargo. Its v8 engines deliver strong torque for towing heavy loads, and it's supremely stable when pulling heavy trailers through nasty, windy weather. Suburban provides a stable, comfortable ride for long-distance travel. Last but not least, it's fully capable of slogging down muddy two-tracks, whether in pursuit of the great outdoors or to get some work done.  the 2005 model year brings some minor improvements. Fuel economy is improved. A revised tire-pressure monitor is now standard, alerting drivers when a tire needs air. New options include stand-alone traction control and 17-inch all-weather tires. The z71 off-road package is available for 2wd models. A touch-screen navigation radio is available. The onstar telematics system is upgraded with enhanced hands-free operation. Interior trim has been revised. Running boards are more aerodynamic. There's also a new 7-to-4-pin wiring adapter for the trailer package.  completely redesigned for model year 2000, the suburban then received a substantial update for 2003, with more than 40 major changes designed to enhance safety and improve reliability. The stabilitrak electronic stability program became available for improved control on slippery surfaces. New airbag systems were designed to better protect children and adults of various sizes. Adjustable pedals became available for the comfort and safety for drivers of smaller stature. Brakes were refined, and an all-new electrical architecture promised improved reliability. Xm satellite radio became available, along with a new panasonic dvd system for back-seat monkeys. The numbers don't really relate to anything and the term 1500 is often dropped in conversations. Suburban 1500 models come equipped with a 5. 3-liter v8. The 2500 models are available with a choice of 6. 0-liter or 8. 1-liter v8s. No diesel is currently available.  the ls is the standard trim in either load range, which includes three-zone manual air conditioning, a 40/20/40 split bench front seat with six-way power for the driver, 60/40 split folding middle bench seat, fog lamps, assist steps, powered and heated outside mirrors, 16-inch aluminum wheels, and a rear window defogger. A preferred equipment group 1,035) adds bucket seats with upgraded cloth upholstery, a floor console, and a bose nine-speaker audio system with rear controls and headphone jacks. Xm satellite radio 325) is optional.  the more luxurious lt 5,710) brings automatic climate control, leather seat inserts, power folding mirrors with in-glass turn signals and electrochromic dimming on the driver's side, the bose stereo, xm satellite radio, onstar, 17-inch aluminum wheels, and many other features. Lt is also available for the 2500 5,320).  the z71 off-road package 6,185) includes heavy-duty springs and gas-pressure shocks, appearance items outside and lt-grade comfort and convenience features inside. Z71 is now offered on 2wd and 4wd 1500s, but not on 2500s.  entertainment options include a panasonic dvd player 1,485 on ls, $1,295 on lt) with wireless headphones, auxiliary audio/video jacks and remote game plug-in. The touch-screen navigation system is optional as is an electric tilt-and-slide sunroof. walkaroundthere's no mistaking the 'burb. The chevrolet suburban looks like an old friend. It hasn't been completely redesigned since 2000, and the 2005 model retains a family resemblance to suburbans far older than that. Most people probably won't even notice that the running boards, or assist steps, have been redesigned for better aerodynamics and, says chevrolet, better durability.  but we will miss the side-by-side cargo doors that are no longer available at the rear. Gm says they didn't sell very well, but we found them useful when pulling trailers because they would usually clear the trailer tongue jack. They also made it easier to control a dog while opening them. Nonetheless, for 2005, all suburbans come with the one-piece rear hatch with separately opening glass that most families prefer. The hatch is lightweight and can be opened with one hand. It comes with a window wiper/washer, and the one-piece window affords the driver a good view rearward.    a puddle lamp mounted below the lt's side mirrors shines down to light up the perimeter. It can be turned on using the keyless remote. That's a nice feature when approaching the suburban in a dark parking garage, as it illuminates underneath the vehicle. In most respects, it is identical to the more luxurious gmc yukon xl. interiorclimbing into a suburban is a challenge for some. Running boards make it easier for others. The suburban's step-in height is lower than it was with pre-2000 models, a benefit of the current model's fully boxed frame.  once inside, the suburban is roomy and friendly. The lt's leather seats seem more supportive, but we think there's room for improvement here. Big and cushy, they are similar to the seats found in all of gm's full-size pickups and suvs. Dual-level airbags inflate with less force in less forceful collisions. Sensors in the front passenger seat and seat belts measure the size and weight of the front-seat passenger and disable the airbag for child-size passengers.  the second row is quite comfortable and very roomy. Headphone jacks allow rear-seat passengers to listen to cds while those up front tune in the radio. The third-row seatback folds down without having to remove the headrests, then the whole thing flips forward to substantially increase cargo capacity. A short prop rod locks it into place. The one-piece seat can be removed and is mounted on wheels, but it weighs 75 pounds, so removing it is a lot easier with a second person to help. We've done it.) loading cargo is easy because there's plenty of space for it. The spare tire lives underneath the vehicle, freeing up rear cargo space. driving impressionride quality in the 2005 chevy suburban 1500 is smooth, greatly improved over the previous-generation (pre-2000) models. The standard premium smooth ride suspension features a hydraulically controlled rear self-leveling system to keep the suburban at a normal ride height even when carrying heavy loads. Whether towing a horse trailer or picking up the soccer team, autoride continually adjusts the suspension for optimum ride and handling. This technology also helps reduce dive when braking (so that the nose of the vehicle doesn't dip down unduly), and body roll (or lean) during cornering, both of which improve stability.  handling is excellent for a big, heavy truck. The steering is responsive and doesn't isolate the driver from the road. The suburban grips the road surprisingly well for such a large vehicle. 2005 chevrolet silverado 2500 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. A driver information center, located in the instrument panel cluster, provides various bits of information, i. 2004 chevrolet colorado review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. All-new pickup gets a high five. introductioncolorado is chevrolet's new moniker for its midsize pickup, replacing the s10. It's more, however, than just substituting an outdoorsy name for a nondescript alpha-numeric designation. The colorado is new from the tire print up, so to christen it anew is apropos.  the new chevrolet colorado is slightly larger than the s10 it replaces. It gains in passenger space and loses a minor amount of cargo space. It comes with a completely new five-cylinder engine option instead of a v6 and its towing rating decreases. The new colorado is designed to offer favor comfort over towing and hauling capability that is seldom tested by most mid-size truck owners. The chevy colorado is designed for the owner who wants the utility of a pickup at hand, but doesn't regularly tow or haul heavy loads. Roominess and comfort are more important to the colorado driver. lineupchevrolet defines models in the colorado line by drivetrain and cab configuration. Ground clearance at the rear differential is 8. 4 inches.  the colorado is also available with the zq8 sport suspension. Riding about two inches lower than the standard suspension, these sport trucks also have a monochromatic paint scheme, fog lamps, a leather-wrapped steering wheel. It's available only with two-wheel drive and comes standard with 17-inch wheels. It carries a base price of $17,545.  major colorado options include power windows, locks and mirrors 500); traction control for 2wd models 295); locking rear differential 270); side curtain airbags 195); leather-trimmed heated power-adjustable bucket seats 1,495).  the chevrolet colorado is mechanically identical to the gmc canyon. Trim and packaging of features differ, however, and some equipment, such as chevy's zq8 sport suspension, is not available on the gmc. walkaroundthe chevy colorado follows the lead of the silverado in styling with its bold chrome crossbar grille and multi-lens headlamps (high and low beams, daytime running lamps and turn signals). On models so equipped, fog lamps are inset into the bumper. Otherwise the colorado has a clean, modern look, the crew cab looking well balanced despite the extra cab length. Reach-through door handles allow a full handful of grip for easy opening even with gloves.  cargo boxes are 6-foot, 1-inch on regular and extended cab models and 5-foot, 1-inch on the crew cab. A two-position locking tailgate, fully closed or 55-degrees open, as well as lowered to horizontal, provides more cargo utility. When partway down, the colorado can carry a 4-by-8 foot sheet of plywood flat.  chevrolet dealers have a range of accessories, including a bed extender, hard and soft tonneau covers, tubular assist steps and splash guards, that can be installed at the time of delivery, naturally at extra cost. Gmaccessories. Com. interiorthe interior of the chevrolet colorado ls is swathed in hard plastic that's not very finger friendly but should prove to be durable, important in a pickup truck. Inside door releases feel solid and sturdy, though have the same hard feel. The center console has cup holders as well and these look capable of handling a variety of drink containers. The center arm rest opens for a small storage space, big enough for a large wallet, and it wobbles when pushed. A small tray on the console will be useful for all sorts of oddments that don't need to be covered.  the instrument panel is traditional white on black with orange needles. It's very legible and doesn't hide its functionality with artsy markings. Practical control design continues to the center stack. No ground-breaking innovation here, just straightforward knobs and dials that don't require a post graduate degree to operate.  the front buckets are wide and soft and most derrieres should find them comfy on long trips. They offer little lateral support, but that would be important only to those who try to drive their colorado like a sports car.  the crew cab's rear seat has surprising leg room and a comfortable back angle, not the near vertical back rest found even in some full-size pickup cabs. The chair-height rear seat gives lots of legroom. Called the vortec 2800, it makes a muscular 185 lb-ft of torque at 2800 rpm. That should be enough for most mid-size pickup truck duties, though it's not offered on crew cab models.  the new five-cylinder configuration, most recently seen in audis and volvos, produces a distinctive, siren-like sound at full throttle, something found in the colorado as well. At cruise, the engine is quiet and there's no indication that it's anything out of the ordinary. The vortec 3500 sustains that torque level over 90 percent of its rev range, good when hauling of heavy loads or towing trailers. Recommended fuel is 87 octane regular, making the colorado cheaper to keep.  max towing for the colorado with the five-cylinder engine and automatic transmission is 4000 pounds, 2000 less than the old s10. Chevrolet was willing to trade capability that few used in a midsized truck for a more comfortable ride, important for those who frequently use their trucks for general passenger hauling.  driving a rear-drive colorado with the vortec 3500 proves that chevy made the right decisions. On loose gravel, whether on a dirt road or just off the pavement, if given too much power, the traction control system reduces power completely and the colorado falls on its face. That's not important except when trying to merge into fast-moving traffic from a pebbly roadside. The traction control override button, located high on the dash, can be used in such a situation. In snow, however, the traction control should help in taming a pickup's lightly loaded rear end.  by sacrificing some towing capacity, gm engineers were able to reduce the rear spring weight and otherwise tune the suspension for a smooth ride, and that's really evident in the colorado. On a washboard dirt road the rear end isn't bouncing around like a polynesian hula dancer's grass skirt. It's the front end that feels firmer. It still rides like a truck, but it isn't nasty about it.  the front disc/rear drum brakes are big and meaty and certainly should be enough for any load the colorado is allowed to carry. Suspension was firm enough to handle hard stops on pavement without drama. The abs does its job neatly, keeping the truck in line even when slamming on the brakes on a gravelly road. summarythe colorado is a new generation of mid-size pickup trucks, a market that has largely been ignored while the larger pickups get all the attention. But for anyone looking for a smaller truck that's not cramped on the inside and is still capable of handling a respectable load or pulling a personal watercraft, the colorado is ideal. Load three dirt bikes on a trailer, the assorted gear in the bed and three bikers and a couple hangers-on can head to the track. Or take the kids to soccer practice and bring home a dozen bags of mulch. The colorado handles it all with aplomb. model lineupchevrolet colorado regular cab 2wd 16,200); extended cab 2wd 18,545); crew cab ls 2wd 20,670); regular cab 4wd 18,760); extended cab 4wd 21,105); crew cab ls 4wd 23,230). assembled inshreveport, la. options as testedautomatic transmission 1,095); power locks, windows and mirrors 500); leather heated seats 1,495); side-curtain airbags 1,000); xm satellite radio 325). model testedchevrolet colorado crew cab ls 4x2 21,011). 2006 chevrolet silverado 1500 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Solid truck priced to sell. introductionthe 2006 chevy silverado is the last of its generation. An all-new generation of trucks is being introduced for 2007. So look for deals on the outgoing 2006 classic versions. The 2006 silverado rides well and handles well. It's quick and it's comfortable. Boxed and hydroformed frame rails provide a strong, rigid platform. It is, as the advertising tagline says, like a rock. Heated seats, a bose stereo, xm satellite radio and other options make long days spent in a silverado comfortable and enjoyable.  silverado benefitted from some significant revisions for 2005. Ls crew cabs 24,615) come with the 4. 8-liter v8 and automatic. Silverado lt (starting at $23,000) is more luxurious, with upgraded upholstery, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and power windows, locks and mirrors. Again the crew cab version 28,165) comes with more, including an upgraded six-speaker stereo. The 5. 3-liter v8 is standard on lt crew cabs. Lt2 and lt3 option packages add yet more equipment, but both price and specific content depend on cab style, driveline, and other factors. Ss gets a high-performance z60 chassis package; 20-inch wheels and tires; full-time all-wheel drive; a lower, wider stance; and special exterior and interior trim.  a hybrid option 1,500) is available in several states. 2008 chevrolet hhr review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Retrowagen gets more performance. introductionthe chevrolet hhr is a car-based retro-wagon that celebrates its chevy heritage with styling inspired by the iconic 1949 suburban. Hhr stands for heritage high roof, a reference to the early high-roofed suburbans and panel trucks that inspired the design of the hhr.  based on the same platform as the chevrolet cobalt, the hhr was first launched as a 2006 model. The hhr competes most closely with the chrysler pt cruiser, but also with honda element, ford escape, and jeep liberty.  for 2008, the hhr lineup gets a new high-performance ss model.  we found the chevy hhr fun to drive. It isn't a sports car, but it's nimble and we were pleased with its acceleration. The hhr feels more responsive than its horsepower, torque, and transmission ratio numbers suggest. Plus, it gets decent fuel economy.  the hhr panel van features smooth, windowless side panels and rear cargo doors with no handles. The rear cargo doors open via an instrument panel button. While it’s more spartan inside and provides seating for only two, the panel best exemplifies the early suburban heritage.  the hhr ss is the most fun to drive, launching quickly off the line and offering sharp handling. On an autocross circuit, we found it handled like a sports car.  the hhr interior isn't as functional as we'd like, however. And the base cloth fabric left us wishing we'd ordered the optional leather.  the chevrolet hhr remains relatively unchanged for 2007 with the exception of slightly more powerful engines and a few additional new color choices. New exterior color options for 2007 include imperial blue metallic and golden teal metallic; a new interior color option is ebony. lineupthe 2008 chevy hhr comes in three distinctively different configurations: hhr, hhr panel, and the new hhr ss. It comes in several trim levels, including the base ls and two lt grades. The ss comes with a high-performance 2. 0-liter turbocharged engine.  the ls 16,515) comes with cloth upholstery, air conditioning, power windows and locks, and a substantial level of standard features and equipment. The lt 17,175) adds an mp3 player with a jack for an ipod, eight ways to adjust the driver's seat, and satin chrome trim.  the 2lt package 2,395) adds the 2. 4-liter ecotec engine, anti-lock brakes, traction control, fog lights, a 260-watt pioneer sound system with seven speakers, 17-inch aluminum wheels, sport-tuned suspension and bright chrome trim.  the hhr panel 2lt 20,850) comes with the satin chrome exterior package, sports suspension, 17-inch painted aluminum wheels. The pioneer sound system is optional. The base hhr panel ls 16,820) is equipped similarly to the five-passenger ls.  safety features include optional front and rear side-curtain airbags 395). Abs comes standard on the 2lt, and is optional for the ls and 1lt 400). Stabilitrak electronic stability control is now standard across the entire hhr model range. walkaroundwe like the retrospective styling treatment served up by the hhr across the model range. The closest comparison to the chevy hhr is the chrysler pt cruiser. Both fill a respective need in their individual camps.  the rounded nose of the hhr is not unlike chevy's ssr, which also reflects the brand's truck heritage. The hhr's fenders are well defined with flat side wheel well openings contrasting favorably with the vehicle's many curved, contemporary sculpted surfaces. Front and rear bumpers and fog lamps are integrated into seamless fascia, with integrated running boards offering another nostalgic touch. The flush glass all around, including the windshield is a nice touch, as are the headlights surrounded by body panels in old school fashion. The tail light treatment consists of two round vertically stacked lenses on each side. The large, prominent grille is chrome, (except on the ss model), and appears much like that of the 1949 suburban.  front and rear bumpers are molded from composite material, integrated as part of their respective fascia. It provides lots of room and functionality without being boxy. When viewed from a distance, the hhr looks larger than it really is. Examined closely, it's compact. The cargo doors open wide enabling cargo access from both sides of the vehicle, as well as from the rear lift gate. The cargo doors are smooth and don’t have external handles; they are opened via a dashboard release button or the remote keyless entry fob. The large, continuous area created by the windowless cargo doors and rear panels is ideal for business logos, advertising or personalization. Side visibility is obviously limited due to the solid sides without windows; one must rely primarily on mirrors for backing maneuvers. The smooth, windowless sides on the panel give it a cleaner, retro, more hot rod look than the standard models. The lack of windows adds security for contents inside.  the hhr ss sits 6 mm lower than it stable mates, but sports extended front and rear fascias that give it the appearance of riding much lower. The new front fascia features an air-dam design with integrated fog lights, and the chrome surround grille comes with mesh-style upper and lower grille inserts. The new rear fascia provides a cutout for single bright exhaust tip. New rocker moldings resemble accentuated running boards. Out back, a rear spoiler is mounted above rear glass. Body-color door handles, mirror caps and rear license plate surround, along with ss badging on the front doors and rear lift gate further differentiate the ss from its stable mates. interiorinside, the chevy hhr provides for the most part, comfortable and functional surroundings. Speaking of headroom, there isn't a lot of it, in spite of the high roof. Also, the door lock button is positioned so that it interferes in driving and resting one's left arm on the window sill, a traditional and nostalgic pose.  cubby storage is limited. There's a handy flip-up compartment on top of the dash and a small glovebox. The rear provides one cupholder and small door pockets. The rear cargo floor flips up to reveal a five-inch-deep tray useful for storage. The rear lift gate is one piece, and raises easily.  solid rear quarter panels are available in place of the windows on all five-passenger models (via a window delete option).  the hhr panel provides seating for two and a large, flat cargo floor, with tie-down points located strategically on the floor with available, floor mats that allow for easier movement of cargo. The hhr panel features a flat load floor featuring a rubberized floor that provides utility and functionality for commercial or lifestyle activities.  the hhr panel cargo area features a standard auxiliary power outlet, as well as a 40-amp auxiliary power connector to provide service for a variety of specialty equipment needs. Two large, storage compartments, with a lockable option, are located forward under the cargo floor (in place of the rear seats in the passenger models). The compartments offer security for things such as computer equipment, flashlights, service manuals and other valuables.  the hhr ss features a special interior with ss-embroidered sport seats with inserts, a specific gauge cluster, an a-pillar-mounted turbo boost gauge and a new shifter arrangement. Three interior color combinations are available: ebony, light gray and victory red. A special gm performance driver’s seat, providing added lateral support and spirited driving comfort is optional and we think it's a must. driving impressionthe 2. 4-liter ecotec (an upgrade that comes as part of the 2lt package) is an impressive and versatile engine. The torque peak figure at such high rpm suggests that the low-rpm pulling power might be weak, but quite to the contrary, it's not. We drive up a steep, slow hill every day, and the hhr plugged up the hill like a tractor, with no shifting-down or searching by the automatic transmission. This high-load, low-rpm driving is what many drivers demand.  transmission ratios have a lot to do with the efficient del. 2004 chevrolet silverado 1500 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Smooth ride, but built like a rock. introductiongm has been the leader in full-size pickups for several years running, but is now facing assaults from all directions. Ford has introduced an all-new f-150. Dodge recently re-engineered the ram. Toyota has introduced a tundra crew cab model. And if that isn't enough, nissan has the gall to launch the titan, a full-size pickup that's every bit as big as the domestics, if not bigger. Model year 2004 is the year of the pickup. Those who value a smooth-riding truck with a low load height should take a good hard look at a two-wheel-drive silverado. And those who value style could do worse. Silverado's aggressive looks draw the eye. This truck is not the wallflower it was a couple of years ago.  silverado got an edgy new look last year, along with significant interior improvements and an all-new electrical system designed to improve reliability by drastically reducing the number of wires running all over the place. It's all be streamlined.  new for 2004 is a roomy and comfortable 1500 silverado crew cab in either 2wd or 4wd. (this is a half-ton model that should not be confused with last year's heavy-duty 1500 hd.) there’s more standard equipment in base-level models for 2004, and there's more content in the z71 off-road package.  silverado rides, handles, and stops as well as the best of them. It's quick and it's comfortable. Boxed and hydroformed frame rails give the gm trucks a strong, rigid platform. It is, as chevy says, like a rock. Three trim levels are available: base, ls, and lt, plus a sporty ss. Full-width fleetside beds are standard, but retro sportside beds are offered for selected models. Silverado 1500 models are available with a 4. 3-liter v6, 4. 8-liter v8, or 5. 3-liter v8.  the 2004 silverado comes with more standard features than last year, including cruise control, power door locks, black bodyside moldings, chrome bumpers, uplevel wheels, and an am/fm radio with cd player. New tire choices are available as well. Ss gets a high-performance z60 chassis package; 20-inch wheels and tires; full-time all-wheel drive; a lower, wider stance; and special exterior and interior trim.  silverado options include xm satellite radio, which provides cd-quality broadcast of 100 digital channels coast to coast, and a bose sound system. Crew cab models offer a panasonic dvd passenger entertainment system and rear-seat audio controls. A passenger-sensing system automatically deactivates the passenger-side front air bag under certain conditions to protect children. They look like the determined eyebrows of a marine drill sergeant saying, 'get out of the way, private, i've got work to do.' a large band runs across the middle of the grille punctuated in the middle by a big, gold chevy bow tie. All of this is smoothly integrated into the front end, including the fog lamps and recessed tow hooks. Add the powerful hood and the silverado presents an appearance that's almost menacing. Squared-off wheel openings continue the aggressive theme down the sides of the truck. In the rear are bulging taillamps that maintain the chevrolet family look yet uniquely identify the silverado. Optional puddle lamps mounted beneath the big side mirrors light the ground along the sides of the truck, handy in the woods and in the city. Heavy-duty models have running lights on the roof, tailgate, and leading and trailing edges of bulging rear fenders. They add visibility for improved safety. Indentations stamped into the inner bed walls can hold boards to form bulkhead dividers or a second floor for two-tier loading. The silverado's load floor is 31. 6 inches above the ground on 2wd models, 33. 7 on 4wd. That's relatively low, and low is good when loading heavy cargo. Short-box beds are 78. 7 inches long; long boxes are 97. 6 inches long. Fleetside boxes are 64. 8 inches wide (at the floor); sportside boxes measure 49. 1 inches wide. All measure 50 inches wide between the wheel housings.  a pro-tec composite box is available for silverado 1500 extended cab short box models. Pro-tec is a nearly indestructible material that's lighter and stronger than steel. It never rusts and it resists dents. Pro-tec tailgates can support a lot more weight than steel tailgates. interiorinside, the silverado is roomy and comfortable. The standard front bench seat is comfortable and can seat three, giving extended cab and crew cab models capacity for six people. It’s split 40/20/40, and the middle part of the bench folds down to become a center console armrest. There's lots of head room and plenty of leg room, hip room, and shoulder room. The standard bench is available in cloth or vinyl. Bucket seats are more comfortable and adjust every which way. We like both the premium cloth and the leather. The silverado's seats are big and cushy, but not as comfortable as those in the ram and f-150.  the bucket seats are separated by a deep center console that holds lots of stuff. The top of the lid features a nice rubber-lined indention handy for small items, though it would be even better if the rubber was an insert that could be removed for cleaning. The top of the console is angled forward, which seems unfortunate because clipboards and other items placed tend to slide off. A big coat hook makes picking up the dry cleaning easier.  the instrument panel, redesigned for 2003, features a large speedometer and tachometer. The manually controlled system that comes on base models is a good, straightforward design. Manual sliders are used to adjust the temperature the available electronic climate controls are better, featuring two large knobs for driver and passenger. A large led displays the mode and fan settings. It's a well-engineered system that's s. Power Windows✔ Tachometer✔ Heated Seats✔ Power Locks✔ Bucket Seats✔ Cruise Control✔ AM/FM✔ CD Player

Lower-profile tires on 17-inch wheels provided better handling than before. A gas/electric hybrid option promised lower operating cost with v8 performance. More minor changes for 2005 included dual electric cooling fans, which are quieter and more efficient than the engine-driven fan used previously; while aerodynamic refinements to the front end and running boards reduced wind noise and promised a slight improvement in fuel economy. Since then, ford has introduced an all-new f-150, dodge has re-engineered the ram, nissan has rolled out the appropriately named titan, and toyota has joined the fray with the biggest tundra ever. There isn't a dog among them. Power is provided by the big 6. 0-liter v8 that's used in the 2500hd/3500.  standard equipment on all silverado models, even the most basic w/t (work truck), are air conditioning, am/fm stereo, tilt steering, a chromed front bumper, painter rear step bumber, and 17-inch painted steel wheels.  moving up to ls trim (starting at $19,725) adds cloth instead of vinyl upholstery, a cd player, and an expanded list of options. Crew cab models offer a panasonic dvd passenger entertainment system 1,295) and rear-seat audio controls. Late in the model year, extended cabs and crew cabs will offer a power sunroof 795). In the rear are bulging taillamps that maintain the chevrolet family look yet uniquely identify the silverado.  silverado's large door openings make getting in and out easier, and the door handles are big and easy to grab.
