2000 toyota camry review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. America's most popular car. introductionthe toyota camry has been the best-selling car in america for the past two years. A spacious cabin, a big trunk, smooth, quiet operation and toyota's reputation for quality, durability and reliability all contribute to the strong sales of this mid-size sedan. Revised styling and an upgraded interior are designed to improve its appeal for 2000. lineupcamry is offered in three trim levels: ce, le and xle. Le v6 and xle v6 are equipped with a 3. 0-liter v6 that produces 194 horsepower. It comes standard with an automatic transmission, anti-lock brakes, air conditioning, cruise control, intermittent wipers, power door locks, mirrors and windows. A more elegant interior with premium cloth upholstery is a big part of the xle attraction. Value package #2 adds leather seating surfaces and trim, a power driver's seat, side-impact air bags and a power moonroof to the xle for $1,604 or to the xle v6 for $1,104. Xle v6 comes with 16-inch wheels and tires in place of the 14- and 15-inch rubber on the other models. walkarounda new grille and bumper design and new multi-reflector headlamps brighten the appearance of the camry for 2000. The taillights have been revised with a new rear bumper design for a smoother appearance. The side moldings were also redesigned. Xle models get a chrome accent on the moldings. the changes are subtle, however. The camry is an attractive car and doesn't look stuffy, but its bland design does not break any ground and will not attract attention. It looks substantial without casting a big shadow. Safety starts with avoiding accidents. To that end, anti-lock brakes are standard on le and xle models and are a $610 option on ce models. Abs allows the driver to maintain steering control of the car in a panic stop by preventing the wheels from locking up. Dual front driver and passenger air bags are standard. Front side-impact airbags are available as an option on all camry models for $250; side airbags are designed to help reduce the likelihood of injuries to the driver or front passenger in case of a severe side collision. Three-point seat belts are standard for all passengers including the rear center position, which is not available in all vehicles. Audio and climate control knobs are simple and within easy reach of driver or passenger. thoughtful amenities abound. A second power outlet is located at the bottom on the front console, next to the built-in tissue dispenser. The sun visors have extension panels. The front cupholders hold 20-ounce bottles, and the rear cupholders can take either juice boxes or cans. There are numerous storage cubbies, and a capacious glove box. the le comes with new fabric and an optional power seat package (no charge) that is also available in leather 1,710). Still, the le's cloth seats lack support. The cloth upholstery, even in the ce, feels built for extended use, however. for 2000, all three trim levels have improved audio systems with am/fm/cd/cassette standard. The rear 60/40 split seat folds forward, increasing the load hauling ability. The gooseneck hinges on the trunk lid, which intrude slightly into the cargo area, are less than ideal, however. driving impressionlong days spent in the toyota camry fail to reveal significant faults with any aspect of the car. The camry feels smooth, soft and comfortable around town. It isn't a sports car and floats a bit on its suspension, but it handles well and is easy to drive fast. It's a hop-in-and-go kind of car, easy to master. And it's comfortable. The base model has wind-up windows and manual door locks, and hardly anyone buys it. Upgrading to the corolla le adds power windows and locks, while the xle comes with wood-grain trim. The corolla xrs features a bigger engine, bigger brakes and performance tires for sportier driving dynamics. It also works best on darker colors because the added panels appear more integrated. the corolla is slightly longer than the honda civic. The nissan sentra is noticeably taller and bigger. The nissan versa, honda fit, and toyota yaris are subcompacts, which are smaller than compact-class cars such as the corolla. interiorthe corolla has a comfortable, pleasant interior. Materials and patterns are understated. The standard cloth upholstery appears two-tone at first between bolsters and cushions, but it's just an illusion caused by the texturing. The wood-grain trim on the xle adds visual warmth not often seen in compacts and helps break up color monotony. leather upholstery is available on the sport seats in the s and xrs models, though apparently leather is not offered on the xle. Wood grain trim is available on some models, but the faux wood reflects glare more than the standard trim does. a dash is conventional, framing speedometer and tachometer with fuel and ancillary data. Corolla xle and xrs employ electroluminescent optitron gauges popularized by lexus for utmost clarity. Controls used often are on the tilt/telescoping steering column stalks, with others on dash and center stack. Second, it lacks voice recognition and bluetooth. Still, toyota's navigation system is easy to learn to use and it works very well. the front seats are comfortable, and getting in and out of them is easy. The sport seats in the xrs use heavier bolsters for more support when cornering, though they are not well suited to people with large frames. the rear seat is apropos for the class. The floor is flat except for a small incline to the back of the console. A sliding-top console comes on upper level models that's appreciated on long drives. a remote release opens the trunk lid, which springs from the top of the bumper and bisects the taillights for a wide loading space. The manual shifter is good, not as slick and precise as the honda civic but far ahead of the chevrolet aveo's rubbery arrangement. Although the corolla xrs five-speed automatic has sequential shifting on the console lever, it would benefit from wheel-mounted paddles like those on the honda fit sport. the standard corolla rides more smoothly than the corolla xrs does. As wheel diameter increases and tire aspect ratio decreases (causing the tire sidewalls to become shorter) so does handling crispness improve and the potential for ride comfort degrade. Just below the beltline, a character line flows in a gentle s-curve from the teardrop headlamps to the teardrop taillights. The solara looks aerodynamically efficient, and it is, with a drag coefficient of just 0. 29 cd, making it slip through the air much more easily than the previous solara, good for wind noise, gas mileage, and speed. The outside door handles are easy to grab, much better than lever-style handles. toyota says the convertible's body structure was designed from the ground up for topless motoring, unlike the previous-generation convertible, which was adapted from the then-current coupe. The solara was designed and engineered in the u. And is built in the u. S. interiorthe toyota camry has a comfortable interior with controls that are straightforward and easy to operate. Everything is laid out simply. Optional power-adjustable pedals help shorter drivers find a safer, more comfortable driving position, moving the pedals closer to them and permitting them to move farther from the airbag-armed steering wheel. radio and climate controls are mounted high in the center of the dash for easy access. Three big knobs mounted prominently in the center of the dashboard are used to manually control heating, ventilation, and air conditioning on base, se and le models. Xle models get automatic climate controls with a smooth tactile feel that reminds us of lexus, which set the modern standard. The stereo uses big tuning and volume knobs and big buttons that make it easy to operate, whether scanning for radio stations or moving between songs on a cd. We found the audio quality on the available jbl sound system a bit lacking, however. we found the optional navigation system easy to use, easier than system on expensive european cars, and it recalculates quickly. the instruments are located in a relatively small pod directly in front of the steering wheel, with a large half-moon tachometer and matching speedometer. The fuel and temperature gauges are located within the two larger instruments. Lights and windshield wiper/washer controls are on stalks on the steering column, leaving the left lower edge of the dash free of switches. the camry dashboard is relatively plain, with no large curved surfaces, and it is set relatively high. The dash blends nicely into the door panels, but the cover for the passenger-side air bag is noticeable as the seams show clearly. Many other manufacturers have made the passenger-side air bag invisible. a wide center console separates the two front bucket seats and contains useful storage areas. The parking brake on the base and le is located in the center console, whereas the se and xle get foot-operated parking brakes. rear-seat passengers will find the camry's accommodat.
