2002 pontiac bonneville review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Full-size room with sport-sedan handling. introductionpontiac's bonneville sure is an eye-catcher: aggressive, distinctive, even slightly overstated. It backs up its looks with a responsive, sporting personality. The supercharged ssei, particularly, can run with the best from overseas. Yet underneath those racy lines lives a practical sedan with real full-size room.  the bonneville was redesigned for the 2000 model year, and has not changed substantially since then. For 2001, the onstar navigation and security system became standard on all models, and heated front seats joined the option list. Revisions for 2002 are a little more substantial and include new front and rear fascias for the se trim level, 17-inch wheels for se and sle, and more standard equipment all around. lineupthe bonneville lineup comprises the base-level se 25,530), the sportier sle 28,720), and the supercharged ssei 32,950). The ssei adds a positive-displacement supercharger that boosts output to 240 horsepower. The 29mm standard bar; and a 20mm bar added at the rear).  ssei pushes the bonneville's price into the near-luxury segment. But that price buys the supercharged engine, stability control, magnasteer variable-assist power steering, leather upholstery, 12-way power seats, head-up instrument display, monsoon eight-speaker audio, automatic mirrors and a universal garage door opener.  many of the standard features on the higher level models can be ordered as options on the se and sle. walkaroundthe pontiac bonneville demands attention. Each trim level presents a slightly different face to the world. Se and sle models come with fog lamps mounted in the outer edge of the bumper, while the ssei's fog lamps nestle closer together, on either side of the grille. Bonneville's profile is a long, undulating s-curve that's emphasized by ribbed body cladding on the lower sides of the ssei. Heavily trimmed taillights accent its round rump. Even the base se model rides on 16-inch alloy wheels. Chrome wheels, new for 2002, are optional on sle and ssei. interiorthe bonneville's interior is roomy and comfortable. An optional front bench seat 150 on se only) provides theoretical six-person seating, although adult passengers will find the center of either the front or rear seat a little cramped. Rear-seat head and legroom is good for two passengers. The standard seating configuration includes spacious bucket seats in front that hold driver and passenger in quite snuggly, especially with cloth upholstery, which is a lot less slippery than the optional leather. The front edge of this console wraps up over the top of the instrument panel in one great sweep. No less than eight fluidic vents in the dashboard can be aimed in any direction. Within the instrument pod, a group of six small but easy-to-read gauges cluster around the steering wheel. An oil pressure gauge and voltmeter join the speedometer, tachometer, fuel and water temperature gauges. The second set of audio controls on the steering wheel are convenient, and their safety value should be obvious. Yet the rest of the industry is only now catching up with this pontiac innovation.  in addition, the ssei comes with a message center that can display a variety of malfunction warnings. Individual settings for the driver's seat, mirrors, climate control and audio preferences can be programmed as well. All models come with catcher's mitt front seats designed to support the body in an accident. Seat-integrated safety belts contribute not only to safety but also to a comfortable fit. Rear-seat passengers are not forgotten, as they get a decent-sized center armrest with cupholders and a storage box. Pass-through access to the trunk for skis and other long items is available when the console is folded down. driving impressionthe pontiac bonneville's driving characteristics live up to its looks. Even in the standard se configuration, the bonneville has enough power to provide respectable performance. Thanks to the engine's relatively large capacity, it has more torque than most of its rivals, and torque is what contributes to quick stoplight getaways and on-ramp acceleration. In fact, pontiac has not built a car with a significantly wider track than anyone else's since 1960. (the dodge intrepid covers only a fraction of an inch less road, front and rear.) but never mind.  the bonneville rides on a stiff body shell and a firm suspension that acquit themselves well on a twisty road. This is a solid-feeling car, one that doesn't wallow like so many full-size american models of years gone by.  nor does it torque steer, as some other powerful front-drivers do, thanks to its clever suspension design. (torque steer is the tendency to pull the steering wheel in one direction or the other under hard acceleration.) traction control 175 on se; standard on other bonnevilles) helps keep the front tires from spinning when accelerating hard. All models ride on an automatic load-leveling rear suspension, which helps keep handling consistent regardless of the number of passengers or amount of luggage aboard.  the sle and ssei, with their slightly stiffer suspension, handle better than the se but still ride without too much harshness. Stabilitrak stability control, standard on ssei, enhances active safety by selectively applying the brakes to the front wheels to counteract skids. The ssei also comes with gm's eyecue head-up display, which projects vehicle speed and other information onto the inside of the windshield, just in front of the driver. summaryanyone who needs a full-size car, but prefers a car with a sporty personality, should enjoy the pontiac bonneville. It has a unique look that fits pontiac's performance image. Power Seats✔ Power Windows✔ Power Mirrors✔ Tachometer✔ Bucket Seats✔ AM/FM✔ Chrome Wheels✔ Air Conditioning✔ Climate Control✔ Alloy Wheels

2006 pontiac solstice review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. All-new two-seat roadster is fun to drive. introductionpontiac faithful have been getting short shrift in recent years. The general motors division assigned the task of building and selling excitement hasn't been doing well in either regard. The firebird is history. An australian import wears the emperor's clothes but hasn't earned the crown. It's a great-looking, two-door, two-seater, drop-top sports car for less than 20 big ones. Okay, that's the base price, and there will be few if any base models at a dealer anytime soon, but even adding all the available options boosts the price only to about $25,000.  initially, the solstice sticks to the basics of a two-seat roadster. There's no electronic stability program, antilock brakes cost extra, and occupant safety features are the bare minimum.  but for many drivers, basic delivers. We found the solstice fun, easy to drive, and a hands-down head-turner. And it's built right here in the u. A. lineupinitially, just one model is available. The urethane-clad steering wheel has a tilt adjustment. The six-speaker stereo receives am and fm and plays a single cd. The shift knob wears leather, but seats and door panels are covered in cloth. Next up is a power package for windows, door locks and outside mirrors that also has a keyless remote fob and body-color paint for the mirrors 625). Last, in the form of groupings, is the premium package, which covers the steering wheel, seats and door panels in one of two shades of leather 590); this package, however, is conditioned on also buying the convenience package.  options include air conditioning 960); a string of stereo upgrades adding, first, an mp3 capability 195), then an mp3 capability plus six-disc, in-dash cd changer 495), then a seven-speaker-with-subwoofer monsoon system 395) that's not available with the base stereo, and finally an xm satellite radio system with a three-month trial subscription 325), which requires the monsoon system; polished aluminum 18-inch wheels 495); chrome 18-inch wheels 695); limited-slip rear differential 195); floor mats 60); and a smoker package with lighter and ash tray 40). Onstar is slated to make the option list before the close of 2005, a five-speed automatic transmission in the spring of 2006.  dual-stage front airbags are standard. There's not a straight line, a flat surface or a right angle on the body of this car. Indeed, the only body part formed by the traditional method of stamping a piece of sheet metal is the small panel behind the front wheel well. All the rest come via a process called hydroforming, which uses extremely high water pressure to press sheet metal into a mold. Slow and low-volume, yes, and labor-intensive, but the best way pontiac's engineers found to translate the idealized, flowing lines of the original concept car to reality. Hydroforming generally results in stiffer chassis, which is a key element for sharp handling and a smooth ride.  an iconic, two-piece grille and an emblem are the sole clues on the front end that this car is a pontiac. The bumperless, severely rounded fascia hints of early bmw coupes and convertibles. Headlights and, when ordered, fog lamps are recessed into the fenders' upper and lower outboard curves, respectively. The hood rises gradually between primly proud headlights to the cowl, where it runs into a parking strip for the windshield wipers at the base of the windshield.  the forward portion of the side silhouette is strikingly similar to that of the very first corvette, with the front overhang tautly draped over a wheel well positioned at the extreme end of the car. The stubby rear quarters resemble the current lotus elise sans spoiler, with the profile drawn sharply up from the rear wheel well and over the trailing edge of the clamshell trunk to aero-like fairings behind the high-back seats. The body filling the space between the wheel wells easily could have been sliced out of that same corvette and sectioned to tuck into the solstice's relatively short wheelbase.  stylistically, the convertible top is a coup. Yes, the solstice looks best with the top down, but even with it up, the side aspect shows a decent aero look. And this is with a storage system that tucks the top away under a clamshell-like, rear-hinged trunk lid covering the entire back part of the car. The trick is a couple of mini-ferrari dino-like sail panels bookending the vertical rear window. These do add complexity, however, and an extra step or two in opening the trunk while the top is up and in raising and lowering the top. Click the remote, and three latches pop loose, one in the center for the trunk lid, the other two outboard beneath the two wings. Fold the wings up, then open the trunk; to close, reverse the process, always remembering to latch both wings. The entire process takes less than a minute.  the rear view looks like it was sketched by somebody with an understanding of and affinity for fluid motion. Taillights sit atop the fenders, directly above pods housing the combination back-up lights and reflectors. A single, chromed exhaust tip exits through a half-round opening molded into the right end of the black mesh diffuser that runs across the bottom of the rear fascia.  the solstice may not break new ground as a design, but is instead a sweet blending of elements of sports cars that have gone before. The result is an eye-pleasing, delightfully proportioned, almost sensuous package. interiorconsidering that it incorporates components from cadillac, chevrolet, opel, and fiat, the cabin of the solstice looks and feels more integrated, more of a whole than expected. Quality of fit and finish on the test car was on a par with the competition, save for an uneven cover on the passenger airbag and one fixture central to a functioning convertible. Ergonomics, too, earn mostly good scores.  an eyebrow-like hood rises from the dash near the driver's door to loop over the instrument cluster and drop down the right-hand side of the center stack, offering the passenger a hail mary hand-grip before wrapping around the shift boot. A pair of large, round dials report engine and road speed, with a smaller dial resting in the saddle between those two doing the same for fuel level. Too bad all three circles make goo-goo eyes at the unlined top rather than gaze meaningfully into the eyes of the driver. Three well-proportioned climate control knobs fill the space in the center stack between the vents and the stereo panel, the last a jarring rectangle unlike every other shape in the solstice's interior. We would have placed the solo power point on the other side of the binnacle, near the passenger, though, to keep the radar detector cord out of the way of the climate control knobs and stereo.  door latch handles are comfortably located high up and forward on the doors. The power mirror control, too, is convenient, at the top of the inside door pull just below the door handle, where an index finger can easily manipulate it. The hand brake is on the passenger side of the drive tunnel, opposite of where it should be, however. The power window buttons would be easier to use if they were farther forward in the armrests. And the knob for adjusting the seatback angle is difficult to reach with the doors closed.  seats fit us well, although the bottom cushions came up a bit short on thigh support. And a seat height adjustment would ease the strain on the hamstrings over long drives. Space-wise, the solstice compares well with the miata, with an inch more head room, identical hip room and barely half an inch less leg room.  elevated seats would improve outward visibility all the way around, too, although the high beltline arguably adds a degree of safety in side impacts. On the subject of occupant safety, the solstice provides what's mandatory and nothing more. Thus, while every 2006 mazda miata mx-5 has frontal airbags, seat-mounted side airbags and passenger-seat child safety seat anchors, the solstice comes only with frontal airbags.  storage consists of a decent-size glove box, plus a couple of nets sewn. 2002 pontiac sunfire review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Pontiac excitement on a budget. introductionthe pontiac sunfire is agile and easy to drive. The sedan is available in only one trim level, se 15,275). Coupes are available in two models, se 14,565) and gt 17,030). Although slightly less powerful than last year's 2. 4-liter twin-cam, the ecotec is quieter, lighter and more fuel efficient.  all sunfires come standard with air conditioning, anti-lock brakes, a tilt steering column, an am/fm/cassette audio system and 14-inch all-season tires. Also new for 2002 is an auxiliary power outlet for all versions and an electronic trunk release. walkaroundthe pontiac sunfire was last restyled for the 2000 model year and changes since then have been minimal. The floor console provides great functionality and includes a padded armrest. Other interior features include two forward-mounted cupholders, a concealed coin holder, and extra storage space for cds, cassettes and other items.  a leather-wrapped steering wheel, shift knob and parking brake handle are standard on gt models. Radio and hvac controls are angled toward the driver. The steering wheel can be equipped with convenient stereo controls that reduce the driver's need to take his or her eyes off the road. Most drivers and passengers should find plenty of interior room. Getting in and out of the sunfire coupe is easier than many other coupes.  sunfire's relatively short deck lid conceals slightly more than 12 cubic feet of trunk space, easily accessed with a low lift-over height.  the passlock theft deterrent system that comes on all sunfire models shuts the car off after a few moments if it is started with anything other than the encoded key. A single key is used for ignition and all locks, and a remote keyless entry system is optional. All sunfires are equipped with daytime running lights. Whenever the ignition is on and the handbrake is released or the automatic transmission is shifted out of park, the headlights will be on at reduced power. The normal headlights can be switched on manually or by using pontiac's twilight sentinel system, turning the lights on and off automatically as it senses the amount of available light.  the sunfire is offered with a fine line of sound systems. The entry-level stereo now includes an am/fm radio and cassette deck. A retained accessory feature allows the radio to remain powered for 10 minutes after the power is switched off or until the driver's door is opened. A 200-watt monsoon premium audio system is optional. Using six speakers, the system is tuned specifically for the sunfire's acoustical environment and is capable of completely drenching its occupants with sound. Crisp bass response and clear high frequencies make for great sound. It's a bargain at $195. driving impressionpontiac's sunfire is easy to drive and fun to drive quickly. It hangs on confidently in fast corners and stays poised and predictable. It is balanced well, exhibiting surprisingly little understeer for a front-wheel-drive car. The gt seems at its best in transient, or slalom-type, maneuvers. The suspension comprises macpherson struts up front and a twist beam axle in the rear. It's not as sophisticated as the suspensions in some of the other cars in this class, but it gets the job done.  power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering gives the sunfire quick steering response and good on-center feel. At the same time, the sunfire's body rigidity provides a ride that's firm and confident at higher speeds. Standard on the gt coupe are p205/55 performance tires on 16-inch aluminum alloy wheels.  with the new ecotec 2. 2-liter twin-cam engine, the gt coupe provides comparable power to a honda civic or dodge neon. While some engines tend to be peaky, providing maximum power only in a very narrow rpm range, the ecotec has a broad torque curve and that enhances the engine's driveability. It develops maximum torque (150 pounds-feet at 4000 rpm) at lower revs than the previous 2. 4-liter (155 pounds-feet at 4400 rpm). It's noisier and less responsive than the new ecotec engine, a $250 option on the se. A cable shift linkage aids shifting, while a reverse lockout mechanism makes for a good safety feature.  sunfire comes with disc brakes in front, drum brakes in the rear. An anti-lock braking system (abs) is standard. The sunfire's brake components are designed to optimize wheel slip control, reduce noise, improve pedal feel and contribute to reduced weight. Its low entry price makes the sunfire gt coupe a good value in the competitive coupe market. The optional ecotec engine is a better choice than the base engine. model lineupse coupe 14,465); se sedan 15,275); gt coupe 17,030). assembled inlordstown, ohio, and ramos arizpe, mexico. options as testedoption group 1sc 2,135) includes 4-speed automatic transmission with traction control, variable intermittent wipers, cruise control, security package, remote keyless entry, power locks and content theft alarm, cargo convenience net, reading lights, assist grips, overhead storage, power mirrors and windows, 200-watt monsoon premium audio with cd player and 8 speakers. model testedgt coupe 17,030). 2003 pontiac montana review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Minivan practicality with suv style. introductionfamilies are buying sport-utility vehicles in droves, but not everyone needs or wants an suv. For many, a minivan still is the best option. A thunder sport appearance package adds some suv-style macho.  for 2003, montana is more versatile than ever. The low-priced special value model now comes with a 60/40 split second-row seat, and is available with the standard or extended wheelbase. All have sliding doors on both sides of the body.  pontiac montana comes in two different lengths. Regular-wheelbase models ride on a platform with 112 inches between the front and rear wheels. Extended-wheelbase models have 120 inches between the axles for more interior room. The extended version is 13. 6 inches longer overall, and comes with a larger fuel tank (25 gallons vs. 20). All regular-length montanas have front-wheel drive (fwd), but extended-length models can be ordered with front-wheel drive or gm's compact versatrak all-wheel drive (awd).  pontiac builds the montana in several trim levels, but doesn't bother with different badges like 'gl' or 'se' to distinguish one from another. Either way, the montana special value seats seven, with bucket seats up front, a 60/40 split bench behind that, and a 50/50 split bench in the way-back. Standard equipment includes air conditioning, cruise control, tilt steering, power windows and door locks, power heated mirrors, remote keyless entry, a luggage rack, and p215/70r15 self-sealing tires. Regular-length montana svs ride on steel wheels, while alloy rims dress up the long version. Anti-lock brakes (abs) and side-impact airbags are offered as a package for $950. The montana special value has front-wheel drive, a twist-beam rear axle, and front disc/rear drum brakes.  upgrade to the base model (code 1sa) in regular 25,815) or long-wheelbase 27,415) mode, and captain's chairs replace the second-row bench. The long-wheelbase version can be ordered with versatrak all-wheel drive 30,365), a combination pontiac calls 1sx.  a more deluxe version of the extended-wheelbase montana is available that adds a six-way power driver's seat, leather-wrapped steering wheel with radio controls, a cargo net, rear air conditioning, a rear-seat dvd entertainment center, and other features. Onstar is available as part of a safety & security package 500), along with a theft-deterrent system and universal transmitter. The list also includes leather seats 1175), a sport-tuned suspension with self-leveling 750 with the regular wheelbase, $425 on long vans), and traction control 195). Thunder sport is also available only on extended wheelbase models.  . walkaroundpontiac's montana is quite handsome by minivan standards. This is one pontiac on which the brand's lower body cladding enhances appearance, giving this minivan a more suv-like look. Montana's front end is unmistakably pontiac, with its bird-beak grille dipping down into a curved bumper that seems to smile confidently. The bumper integrates into the body cladding exceptionally nicely  on the other hand, the thunder sport package adds wild-looking bulges to the hood that don't seem to go with the montana.  . interiorpontiac montana comes with a height-adjustable driver's seat, which really aids comfort on long trips. The fore-and-aft range of the driver's seat is one of the longest we've sampled, and will probably provide enough room for six-and-a-half-footers. There are large side bolsters on the backs of the seats, but the seating surface is relatively flat. Handy diagrams on the frames underneath the seats show how to unlatch them from the floor. Doing this reveals a flat and wide rear cargo floor.  the dashboard is neatly arranged, and the gauges are easy to read. However, when the speedometer needle reaches 75 mph, it blocks the right turn-signal indicator. The videotape and cd players are nicely located up on the front console.  the dvd entertainment system was redesigned last year. It now features a large seven-inch screen that folds down from the roof panel, plus a wireless remote, auxiliary jacks for video games and camcorders, and wireless headphones. Called montanavision, the system comes standard on the up-market versions of the long-wheelbase models. What we like best about montanavision is its integration; aftermarket systems we've tried tend to be more difficult to use and not as durable.  . driving impressionwhile not an suv, the pontiac montana can be the perfect family truckster. Crosswinds won't make it wander on the way to wally world. Veer off onto poorly maintained secondary roads and the suspension doesn't get upset. While operating as a front-wheel-drive system in normal conditions, it automatically directs power individually to each rear wheel whenever necessary to maintain forward progress. The system is compact as well as efficient.  the montana corners quickly for a minivan. Body roll is less noticeable than in many other minivans, even those from within the gm stable. The montana handles best when equipped with the sport performance and handling package 750 with the standard wheelbase, $425 on the longer van), which includes alloy wheels, all-weather tires, automatic level control, sport suspension and traction control. The front-wheel-drive montana has a twist-beam rear axle that contributes much-needed rear roll stiffness in a front-heavy vehicle. The noise from the powerplant is limited to an isolated and distant hissing. At 80 mph, the engine is loafing at just 2400 rpm. The montana doesn't sound like it's straining to keep up, and passing slower cars can be done without too much prior planning.  the v6 engine has good throttle response in traffic. The v6 is efficient, too. The epa estimates highway fuel economy at 26 mpg. We managed 25 mpg on a fast trip across michigan.  traction control is optional 195) for front-wheel-drive models and it's a good idea for easier control in winter driving. With a torque-pumping v6 and front-wheel drive, torque steer is sometimes noticeable, a slight tug on the steering wheel under hard acceleration.  the brake pedal is typically spongy, as it is on most gm platforms that were designed in the early 1990s. Newer designs have eliminated this mushy feeling, so the montana will likely get a better-feeling brake pedal in the future. 2005 pontiac g6 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Initially, all will be equipped with a 3. 5-liter v6. By spring 2005, the g6 line will include sporty two-door coupes and convertibles, each with unique styling. The sedan is roomy and plush with excellent overall function and its price point will make it popular choice as a mid-size sedan. A panoramic roof is available with panels that slide rearward, creating a sunroof large enough for the back-seat riders to enjoy an open-air experience. lineupthe pontiac g6 starts at $20,675 for an se v6 (all prices are msrp and do not include the $625 destination charge). An f40 6-speed wide-ratio transaxle will be optional. The gtp is being launched spring 2005.  safety features: side-impact air bags 690) are optional. Abs is optional and is packaged with traction control. Traction assist is available on the se, full-spectrum traction control on the gt, and traction control with the gm/delphi stabilitrak chassis control system will be available on the gtp. Onstar, an excellent safety feature for its ability to summon help, is optional.  options include onstar 695), xm satellite radio 325), a standard sunroof 700), a panoramic roof 1500), monsoon premium sound 300), remote starting 150), and chrome-finish 17-inch wheels 650). Various options packages are available, including a leather package for the gt 1365). walkaroundthis car, according to pontiac, is the living expression of what all future pontiacs will look like and act like, a redefinition of pontiac's longstanding 'excitement' theme. All of the previous earmarks of a grand am are gone, along with the name.  gone are the massive side cladding panels and standoff rear spoiler associated with the pontiac grand am. Instead, there is a single spear running down the sides of the g6 with a delicate integrated spoiler lip on the trailing edge of the decklid. That's on the gt models. The stripper version, the se, has almost no decoration at all. It's a bit soulless in style when compared to the previous high-energy, hot-looking grand am, even out-dulling the honda accord.  the pontiac designers were handed a much longer wheelbase, at 112. 3 inches some five inches longer than the old grand am's, and they have made the most of it in terms of interior roominess. A 6-foot, 4-inch passenger can sit behind a 6-foot, 4-inch driver with plenty of room in models with no sunroof or the conventional sunroof. Those with tall friends or family may want to consider the new panoramic sunroof is powered by a motor that takes up a big chunk of headroom at the trailing edge of the headliner.  the all-new 2005 pontiac g6 is built in michigan on gm's international epsilon platform, from parts and ideas that used on the saab 9-3, opel vectra, chevrolet malibu sedan and malibu maxx wagonette, all introduced over the past two years.  gm's epsilon architecture is behind the long-wheelbase g6's ride and handling finesse, with a structural stiffness that helps the g6 achieve a 27. 3 hz bending frequency, a big number that ranks with most luxury cars. Pontiac says the car is designed with three major 'torque rings' that add stiffness and strength without taking up too much space or adding weight. In addition to the torque rings, the g6 structure also uses high-strength steel for about 60 percent of underbody components and central tunnel. Rather than just a single layer of sheet steel, the tunnel has an extra piece of steel welded between it and the floor pan. The stiff body uses fully isolated front and rear subframes to carry the heavy stuff, and the front one is hydroformed for strength and light weight. interiorthe g6 interior is altogether new and different from the somewhat excitable, frenetic soft-plastic, fat-knob theme of past grand ams. Instruments and controls are presented in white on black (red at night). Every single knob and escutcheon has a chrome ring around it. Very tasty, and nicely presented, with small, conservative graphics on the faces and labels.  the center stack has a red-led readout and control panel that allows every owner to use the sound system's features, and to customize the locking, lighting, and other functions, with a trip computer and driver information system that's easy, intuitive, and fun to use. The new sporty front bucket seats are made for body comfort and body retention in high-speed maneuvers, and they are very comfortable and thickly padded.  this g6 is a now a grown-up. It's remarkable how easily it works, and keeps conversation possible even at very high road speeds. driving impressionwe found the g6 reasonably quiet. A few powertrain and road noises slipped in here and there, and there was some wind noise from the sharp-cornered mirror bodies. The ride is comfortable and smooth and the car tracks well. The transmission worked flawlessly. It goes right up against the rev limiter. Ratios were well matched to the engine's power and torque bands. Some torque steer was evident on full-throttle starts and low-speed kickdowns, which shouldn't be there on a modern platform like epsilon.  the 3. 5-liter v6 produces 200 horsepower and 220 pound-feet of torque. The 3. 9-liter ho engine that comes in the gtp is rated at 240 horsepower, 245 pound-feet of torque. The gm ecotec 2. 4-liter is a double overhead-cam engine used in the saab 9-3, opel vectra, and chevrolet malibu. They are larger, updated versions of the 60-degree 2. 8-liter v6 engine that was optional on the x-cars in 1980, 25 years ago. They are overhead-valve engines, low-tech to be sure, but they're relatively smooth and quiet and they get decent fuel economy, with an epa city/highway rating of 21/29 miles per gallon.  we did a number of 90-0 mph abs panic stops with the car on a deserted country road, and it stopped straight and true every time with no fade. The brakes have a nice, progressive power application through the pedal. summarythe all-new pontiac g6 is much roomier than the previous grand am. It does its job well and should be a big seller for pontiac in the years to come, especially when the line expands to coupes, convertibles and high-performance versions.  new car test drive correspondent jim mccraw reports from norvell, michigan. model lineuppontiac g6 sedan se v6 20,675); gt v6 23,300). assembled inorion township, michigan. options as testedfront side-impact and head curtain airbags 690); sunroof 700); onstar 695); monsoon am/fm/cd player 300); xm satellite radio 325); convenience package 375) includes 4-way power driver side seat adjuster, adjustable power pedals, seatback pockets, carpeted floor mats. model testedpontiac g6 sedan gt v6 23,300). 2001 pontiac aztek review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Pontiac calls it the world's first srv, or sport-recreation vehicle, a multi-purpose machine designed to support active lifestyles with plenty of space for hauling bicycles, kayaks, snowboards, skis and other recreational gear. The result is an interior that flips and folds and contorts as a highly individualized package with comfortable space for five passengers and lots of personal stuff for sport and play.  core mechanical components come from pontiac's front-wheel-drive montana, so aztek drives and rides with the easy-to-maneuver agility of a minivan, yet the tall stance and load-carrying capacity makes it act like a sport-utility wagon.  and that wild exterior package: some say it's ugly. In january 2001, the aztek will be available with all-wheel drive; the awd version uses gm's new versatrak system, which has met favorable reviews.  two models are available, aztek and aztek gt. The base aztek at $21,445 packs an extensive list of standard equipment including frontal and side-impact airbags and anti-lock brakes. Air conditioning, power windows, power door locks and power mirrors are also standard. The aggressive design makes a polarizing statement that leaves no room for in-between opinions.  despite origins from a platform that supports several general motors minivans, there's no hint of minivan styling in the aztek. And with its arching profile that rounds off the roofline at the rear, it doesn't look like a sport-utility box either. Trapezoidal cat-eye headlamp clusters flank a twin-port grille over-scored by ram-air slots in the hood, with amber turn lights mounted above corner headlamps and round foglamps set below.  the front face tips decidedly rearward and the hood slopes up to the raked windshield as a pillars form rails that flow over b- and c pillars to meet the opposed d pillars sloping down to a squared tail. Creased shoulder planes run the length of both sides above flat doors and the low row of molded side cladding that bulges with rippled streaks implying motion.  in the rear, the flat tail shows the tall bumper below a narrow painted lip of a flip-down tailgate panel and the flip-up liftgate superstructure. It consists of a horizontal pane stacked vertically, followed by a canted pane tipping forward to match the slope of the windshield in reverse. interiorunderstanding the interior is the key to appreciating the aztek. All of the interior elements themselves relate to functional use for recreation and the storage of lifestyle and sports equipment.  bold graphic designs spread across the cloth seat fabrics and door panels. Soft-to-touch molded composite polymers are used to line dashboard, doors and rear panels. Grab handles appear everywhere, on doors, dash and pillars. Below the pair of center vents is a stack of audio and climate controls that features large easy-to-grip rotary dials.  front bucket seats feel firm and have side bolsters with reclining backs and rear storage pockets. The standard second-row bench may be removed and the seatback, divided into two equal segments, folds down flat to expand cargo space in back. Two removable captain's chairs may be substituted for the rear bench with gt trim.  storage compartments dot the cabin, from a front glove box and side door pockets to concealed spaces in rear quarter panels and back sill plate plus center front consoles for the floor and ceiling. The gt package adds a thermal container that locks into position in the front floor console and functions as a console storage bin when in the vehicle or a twin six-pack cooler when removed. Also, flexible zippered bags stuff into front door pockets to house cameras, phones, cd players and other portable gear. Optional storage systems are available for specific sports equipment, such as an interior bike rack for the cargo bay, a cargo net system with 22 different configurations, and a slide-out rear cargo tray that supports 400 pounds worth of gear. There's even a specially designed tent that fits over the rear with tailgate and liftgate open, and a broad air mattress to fill the floor of the cargo bay. driving impressionwe drove a front-wheel-drive aztek gt around lake tahoe, around california's snow-covered sierras, and across the high deserts of nevada to test its spirit, sample the ride quality and experience the built-in comforts. What we found was a sturdy machine that charged up mountain grades and handled twisty curve sets with sure-footed confidence while also maneuvering easily through traffic on urban streets in carson city and zipping along in a stable state on freeways through reno.  power flows readily from the 3. 4-liter v6 engine, as translated through the automatic transaxle. It musters up to 185 horsepower and, despite its hefty weight of almost two tons, propels the aztek to speed quickly, thanks to strong low-end torque. With all engine torque directed to the front wheels it feels more like a conventional easy-to-drive sedan or minivan than a truck-based sport-utility wagon. Smooth but firm suspension settings add to the car-like ride quality, with independent struts up front and a rear twist beam axle.  when the optional all-wheel-drive version emerges late in the model-year, expect it to vary suspension elements with an independent short-and-long arm arrangement in the rear. The new all-wheel-drive system, dubbed versatrak at gm, eliminates the usual center differential in favor of a compact clutch pack for each rear wheel. The intelligent system detects tire rotational differences between front and rear wheels during low-traction conditions, then directs power to either or both rear wheels momentarily before actual slippage occurs at the front wheels, all to maintain steady forward movement. summarythe aztek combines the best features of a minivan, sedan and sport-utility. It boasts wild styling that gets attention, a comfortable passenger compartment, cargo space designed to accommodate sports equipment, and all kinds of gadgets aimed at making life more convenient. Prices pitch it in the affordable column. model lineupaztek 21,445); gt 24,445). assembled inramos arizpe, mexico. options as tested1sc package 2,415) includes leather seating surfaces, power mirrors, cargo cover, cruise control, all-speed traction control, remote keyless entry system, roof rack, six-way power driver's seat, sliding rear cargo tray, leather-wrapped steering wheel with radio controls, am/fm/six-disc cd with 10 speakers and rear cargo speaker controls, security alarm, head-up display, onstar safety system, 16-inch aluminum wheels and p215/r16 blackwall tires. model testedaztek gt 24,445). 2006 pontiac g6 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. New coupe and hardtop convertible join the sedan. introductionthe pontiac g6 lineup has been expanded for 2006. While the g6 doesn't offer the refinement or attention to detail of its japanese rivals, it's an alternative worth considering for shoppers in the mid-size car market. (the g6 replaces the grand am, which has been discontinued.)  the g6 sedan line has been expanded for 2006 as well, with multiple engine and trim levels available. We found the g6 has good road manners even when driven hard, benefits of its long wheelbase and european-designed architecture. The sedan is roomy and plush with excellent overall function and its price point has made it a popular choice as a mid-size sedan. A panoramic roof is available on sedans, with panels that slide rearward creating a sunroof large enough for the back seat riders to enjoy an open-air experience. The gt models come standard with the v6, abs, and 17-inch wheels and tires. A manual six-speed wide-ratio transaxle is optional on gtp sedan and coupe models.  options include xm satellite radio 325), a standard-sized sunroof 800), remote starting 190), and chrome-finish 17-inch wheels 700). Various options packages are available, including a leather package for the gt and gtp 1,365). Basic traction assist is available on the base model, full-spectrum traction control on the gt, and traction control with the gm/delphi stabilitrak chassis control system will be available on the gtp. Onstar 695) is an excellent safety feature for its ability to summon help. We recommend opting for all this stuff. Head injuries are the leading cause of fatalities in side impacts. walkaroundwhen the g6 was introduced, pontiac was quick to point out that all of its future cars would incorporate cues from the g6, that it was the living expression of what all future pontiacs will look like and act like. So far, this has been true, with new pontiacs like the torrent reflecting the g6's clean, uncluttered styling.  gone are the massive side-cladding panels and standoff rear spoiler associated with pontiac. Instead, there is a single spear running down the sides of the g6 with an optional delicately integrated spoiler lip on the trailing edge of the decklid. Gtp models look similar to the gt, but with a standard spoiler chrome exhaust tips. The base version has almost no decoration at all, and is even a bit soulless in style when compared to the previous high-energy, hot-looking grand am, even duller than the honda accord.  the new 2006 coupe and convertible inject a little more excitement into the styling. The two share the same sleek profile, although the roof on the coupe looks much better integrated (for obvious reasons). The frameless windows are indexed, meaning that they automatically open 0. 25 inch when the doors are opened, and close again when the door is closed for a tight seal. From the rear, both cars feature narrow taillights and a sloping decklid that looks similar to the toyota solara coupe and convertible. We think it's an improvement over the blander styling of the sedan.  the pontiac g6 is built in michigan on gm's international epsilon platform, from parts and ideas used on the saab 9-3, opel vectra, chevrolet malibu sedan and malibu maxx wagonette, all introduced over the past two years.  all g6 models use the long wheelbase version of the epsilon platform (like the malibu maxx), which gives them ride and handling finesse, with a structural stiffness that helps the g6 achieve a 27. 3 hz bending frequency, a big number that ranks with most luxury cars. Pontiac says the car is designed with three major torque rings that add stiffness and strength without taking up too much space or adding weight. These measures can be experienced in the smooth ride and sharp handling of the g6. interiorthe g6 interior is altogether different from the somewhat excitable, frenetic soft-plastic, fat-knob theme of the old grand ams. It is much darker, more modern, more european.  the sporty front bucket seats are made for body comfort and body retention in high-speed maneuvers, and they are very comfortable and thickly padded.  rear-seat space benefits from the relatively long wheelbase of 112. 3 inches. In the sedan, a 6-foot, 4-inch passenger can sit behind a 6-foot, 4-inch driver with plenty of room. Those with tall friends or family may want to remember that the panoramic sunroof is powered by a motor that takes up a big chunk of headroom at the trailing edge of the sedan's headliner. Instruments and controls are presented in white on black (red at night). Every single knob and escutcheon has a chrome ring around it. Very tastful, and nicely presented, with small, conservative graphics on the faces and labels. It's remarkable how easily it works, and keeps conversation possible even at very high road speeds. It's an interesting feature and we recommend it.  the two-door convertible's top was engineered with karmann, which specializes in convertibles. The big top opens and closes within 30 seconds, storing under the truck lid and a hard tonneau cover when open.  the trunk is still accessible when the top is down, but space is reduced from a tiny 5. 8 cubic feet to a grocery-bag sized 1. 8 cubic feet. We found the sedan and coupe reasonably quiet around town. A few powertrain and road noises slipped in here and there, and there was some wind noise from the sharp-cornered mirror bodies. The ride is comfortable and smooth and the car tracks well. The more powerful gtp delivers more sprightly performance. The gm ecotec 2. 4-liter is from the same double overhead-cam engine family used in the saab 9-3, opel vectra, and chevrolet malibu. Anti-lock Brakes✔ Bucket Seats✔ Sunroof/Moonroof
