America's most popular car. introductionthe toyota camry has been the best-selling car in america for the past two years. A spacious cabin, a big trunk, smooth, quiet operation and toyota's reputation for quality, durability and reliability all contribute to the strong sales of this mid-size sedan. Revised styling and an upgraded interior are designed to improve its appeal for 2000. lineupcamry is offered in three trim levels: ce, le and xle. Le v6 and xle v6 are equipped with a 3. 0-liter v6 that produces 194 horsepower. It comes standard with an automatic transmission, anti-lock brakes, air conditioning, cruise control, intermittent wipers, power door locks, mirrors and windows. A more elegant interior with premium cloth upholstery is a big part of the xle attraction. Value package #2 adds leather seating surfaces and trim, a power driver's seat, side-impact air bags and a power moonroof to the xle for $1,604 or to the xle v6 for $1,104. Xle v6 comes with 16-inch wheels and tires in place of the 14- and 15-inch rubber on the other models. walkarounda new grille and bumper design and new multi-reflector headlamps brighten the appearance of the camry for 2000. The taillights have been revised with a new rear bumper design for a smoother appearance. The side moldings were also redesigned. Xle models get a chrome accent on the moldings. the changes are subtle, however. The camry is an attractive car and doesn't look stuffy, but its bland design does not break any ground and will not attract attention. It looks substantial without casting a big shadow. Angular lines stretch the car's profile and give it presence. Minimal overhang at the front and rear of the car push the wheels to the corners, giving it a sporty, dynamic stance. At the rear, a tall, square tail provides good aerodynamics. The camry's rigid body structure is designed to offer crash protection as well as form a base for smooth ride quality. interiorcomfort, convenience and a high degree of safety are among the camry's goals. Safety starts with avoiding accidents. To that end, anti-lock brakes are standard on le and xle models and are a $610 option on ce models. Abs allows the driver to maintain steering control of the car in a panic stop by preventing the wheels from locking up. Dual front driver and passenger air bags are standard. Front side-impact airbags are available as an option on all camry models for $250; side airbags are designed to help reduce the likelihood of injuries to the driver or front passenger in case of a severe side collision. Three-point seat belts are standard for all passengers including the rear center position, which is not available in all vehicles. Front seat belt pretensioners cinch the belts tight upon sensing, while impact and force-limiters reduce the belt's load on an occupant's torso to help reduce injury. convenience starts with the doors, all of which open wide to facilitate easier entry and exit than many other sedans. The interior is roomy, thanks to the camry's long wheelbase. A generous amount of sound-deadening material makes the interior luxuriously quiet. The interior design and trim are pleasing, although edging on the ordinary. The flowing dash is no-nonsense, yet pleasing to the eye. It houses bright white-on-black instruments. Like most toyotas, the camry's controls and gauges are designed to be easy to use. Audio and climate control knobs are simple and within easy reach of driver or passenger. thoughtful amenities abound. A second power outlet is located at the bottom on the front console, next to the built-in tissue dispenser. The sun visors have extension panels. The front cupholders hold 20-ounce bottles, and the rear cupholders can take either juice boxes or cans. There are numerous storage cubbies, and a capacious glove box. the le comes with new fabric and an optional power seat package (no charge) that is also available in leather 1,710). Still, the le's cloth seats lack support. The cloth upholstery, even in the ce, feels built for extended use, however. for 2000, all three trim levels have improved audio systems with am/fm/cd/cassette standard. The rear 60/40 split seat folds forward, increasing the load hauling ability. The gooseneck hinges on the trunk lid, which intrude slightly into the cargo area, are less than ideal, however. driving impressionlong days spent in the toyota camry fail to reveal significant faults with any aspect of the car. The camry feels smooth, soft and comfortable around town. It isn't a sports car and floats a bit on its suspension, but it handles well and is easy to drive fast. It provides good smooth power with good performance for passing and accelerating briskly from intersections. Drive more aggressively and it will delay the shift points for more spirited performance. This keeps the transmission from shifting above third gear. We found it provided much better acceleration performance when winding along california's coastal roads or up and down mountain passes. Lower price of entry for a very versatile vehicle. introductionchrysler says its pacifica can't be binned into any existing automotive category. Indeed, the chrysler pacifica can't be neatly classified as a minivan, suv, or station wagon. It does represent a new kind of six-seat family conveyance. pacifica combines the best elements of chrysler's sporty sedans and pioneering minivans and enhances them with mercedes-benz engineering. Pacifica was introduced as a totally new vehicle for 2004. For 2005, the price of entry has dropped with the addition of a new entry model: the five-seat front-wheel-drive model is aggressively priced below $25,000 msrp. pacifica doesn't look like other crossovers, a term usually applied to vehicles that blur the lines between car and sport utility. The pacifica is roomy and comfortable, whether upholstered in fabric or leather, easy to get in to and out of. On the road, pacifica is smooth and quiet, with a rear suspension that comes from a mercedes e-class sedan. All-wheel drive is available, making the pacifica a good choice for the snow country. Another package adds to above package: five supplemental side curtain airbags; automatic headlamps; memory settings for outside mirrors, stereo presets, driver seat and pedals; auto-dim driver and inside mirror; heated and fold-away outside mirrors; and heated front and second row seats 2280). standard safety features comprise dual, multi-stage frontal airbags; driver-side inflatable knee bolster; three-point seatbelts at all seating positions and front seatbelt pretensioners and load limiters; and child safety seat anchors. Its design is less radical than that of the nissan murano and infiniti fx45 crossovers, and its glass-to-steel proportions are new and different. Yet the pacifica looks unmistakably like a chrysler, a result of its grille and other design cues traceable to the chrysler town & country. the pacifica doesn't look that big from the outside yet it's as much as 18 inches longer and 6 inches wider than some of its crossover competitors. At the same time, the pacifica is almost 3 inches lower to the ground than a typical minivan, and that makes it easier to climb inside. The expanse of sheet metal aft of the rear side doors adds visual mass that looks ungainly, but this isn't reflected in the pacifica's handling. the chrysler pacifica is rife with mercedes-benz parts and technologies, including a complete rear suspension system borrowed from the mercedes e-class sedan. The cloth upholstery in the new five-passenger model is nice and looks more expensive than expected. Between them is a center console trimmed in a soft-touch material that gives it a quality feel. There's a pair of cup holders conveniently located immediately aft of the shifter and they work well; fortunately, the german influence only goes where it's beneficial. Redundant controls for the cruise control and sound system are conveniently integrated into the steering wheel spokes. the instrument panel is done as one swooping enclosure that goes from the back of the left door around to the back of the right front door. The dash features a major hood and a minor hood to keep the sun off the instrument faces. Under the sweeping hood, there's an interesting-looking set of instruments and controls; when the optional navigation system is ordered, the display is positioned right in the center of the speedometer, exactly where it should be for safest use. The dvd-based navigation system is set up and run by a circular switch panel to the right of the steering wheel. heating and air conditioning controls seemed fussy at first, but we loved having the auto hi and auto lo switches for those times when we don't want the climate control blasting away at full fan speed. All power windows can be lowered at once by pressing one button. There's a nice analog clock for quickly telling time. They're not quite as cushy as the front-row seats, but we found them roomy and comfortable. Between them is a center console similar to the one in front, with a similarly elegant center console with cup holders as the one in front. Fan controls and vents, a power plug and a tray for a bag are provided to keep back-seat passengers content. The five-passenger model's second-row seat is a bench-type and splits 65/35. We found it easy to fold the second-row seats down the first time out. The seatback tips down then the seat tumbles forward. They are speedy beasts, qualified to occupy the fast lane on those few stretches of german autobahn where unlimited speeds are still possible. They deal with corners gracefully, can stop on the proverbial pfennig and are spacious and comfortable inside. The passat may offer a little less speed and a minimal decrease in amenities, but these seem small sacrifices when accompanied by its significant drop in price. the passat set new standards for its class when it was introduced as a completely redesigned car last year. The reason is simple: most of the hardware that really matters was borrowed from the superb audi a4, the leading entry in a slightly more expensive category. overall, the passat is an attractive alternative to the honda accord, toyota camry or nissan maxima. walkaroundvw stylists turned a neat trick with the passat: it's efficient without looking utilitarian. It's distinctive without being bizarre. The passat has a smooth, clean shape with attractive details. One of these features is the semicircular arc described by the roofline. Along with thin pillars, this new beetle-esque shape guarantees good visibility and generous headroom. Another attractive element is the rounded nose with flush-mounted headlights, which helps lower the passat's coefficient of drag to an impressive 0. 27, the lowest in its class. Aerodynamic efficiency reduces wind noise and improves fuel economy, particularly at higher speeds. viewed from the front or the sides, the passat should age well. The rear view is a little more generic with a large, squared-off trunk lid flanked by large taillights. Efficiency rules here, as the sedan's arching roofline has been supplanted by a normal, and somewhat boxy, wagon design. Load-carrying space is increased, and for many customers extra efficiency is worth the lessening of visual drama. five models make up the current passat lineup. The $24,300 gls comes with a v6 and an automatic. There's also a v6-powered glx that comes with a sports suspension and a 5-speed tiptronic semi-automatic. Wagons are available with either engine. all models are equipped with front-wheel drive for 1999; an all-wheel-drive system will be available for 2000. the gls comes with a high level of standard equipment. The dashboard is contemporary in appearance, with rounded shapes and a distinctive instrument pod that houses the speedometer, tachometer, water temperature and fuel gauges. A multifunction trip computer supplies outside temperature, time, speed, distance and fuel consumption data. Minor controls are well-located, though the rearview mirror adjustment buttons are placed on the upper door panel and seem a bit awkward. in european fashion, the top of the dashboard, the steering wheel and the upper inside door panels are formed of attractively grained dark plastic that contrasts well with the upholstery color. The front seats are noteworthy for their comfort and support. Fore-and-aft adjustments operate smoothly, employing ball bearings on the mounts; height and lumbar support adjustments are standard. A split folding rear seatback increases cargo-carrying space considerably. dual front airbags, seatbelt tensioners that deploy instantly during a collision are standard. A fifth person will be almost as comfortable, at least for short drives. There's plenty of headroom in the front seat even for hat wearers, but rear passengers taller than six feet may find their heads rubbing the headliner -- the only downside to that elegant arched roof. driving impressionthe passat is a superb driver's car. The chassis was tuned to offer an excellent blend of ride comfort and responsiveness. There's little body roll during cornering. Precise, low-effort steering makes aiming the car easy. This car is not intended to be driven as hard as an audi a4, and the all-season tires scream loudly when pushed to their limits. Handling is markedly better than that of competing japanese models and the ride is a bit firmer. That's because this is no ordinary 4-cylinder engine: the 1. 8-liter double overhead cam engine has been turbocharged and uses five valves per cylinder. It generates a healthy 150 horsepower. More important, it delivers 155 foot-pounds of torque at just 1750 rpm that continues past 4600 rpm. That allows the passat to pull briskly away from intersections and accelerate athletically up hills. It also gives it lots of power for driving around town. With five valves per cylinder, variable intake valve timing and a variable geometry composite intake manifold, this engine produces an impressive 206 foot-pounds of torque at just 3,200 rpm. The five-speed automatic can be left alone to change gears automatically. In this mode, it's a smart transmission that uses adaptive electronics to control shifting based on whether the driver is being gentle or is seeking maximum acceleration performance. those seeking greater control can shift the transmission into the tiptronic mode, a design licensed from porsche. Sliding the shift lever into a separate area to the right of the normal shift gate permits manual shifting. A forward push on the lever causes upward gear changes, with a light pull back for downshifts. The tiptronic is a fine dual-purpose transmission, sporting or unobtrusive as the driver wishes. Long freeway stretches highlighted the smooth ride, comfortable seats and low noise levels. Mountain passes allowed us to make maximum use of the passat's exceptional handling. It performs and handles like a sports car, but rides like a small luxury sedan. None of them, after all, can claim to be top-flight german performance sedans.
